System Load Compliance — Continuous Dehumidification and Temperature Control

Application of the APR Control for Humidity and Constant Temperature control solutions is the source of our greatest number of inquiries and the area where the APR Control offers some of the greatest cost benefits.

Fairbrother Engineering was looking for an answer to a mold and mildew problem as a result of high humidity at Sheraton World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The APR Control was installed on the 9000 BTU PTAC in room 1503. Two humidity and temperature data loggers were employed, one to track performance of the PTAC unit with the APR Control in room 1503 and the other in room 1507 with identical load characteristics, but without the APR Control. The data was logged for a week and the difference in performance of the two systems is significant

Energy Savings and Extended Equipment Life

The APR Control modulates system capacity to match changing load conditions, so that the demands on the refrigeration circuit, particularly the compressor, are significantly reduced. The Oak Ridge Center for Manufacturing Technologies has numerous clients in Government and Industry who were looking for solutions to their continuously escalating energy costs, and their equipment replacement cycle. The application of an APR-2 on the first on/last off circuit of the 12.5 ton unit serving their facilities provided the opportunity to conduct a full energy efficiency evaluation, with results as high as 19.8% energy efficiency based on the KW usage.

These evaluations and associated results vary because of equipment variety, capacity ranges and unique application solutions.

Multiple Evaporator Zoning with Dehumidifying Zone

The ability of the APR Control to modulate system capacity can be called upon to provide control for the use of multiple independently controlled evaporators with a single speed, single circuit compressor/condenser.

This configuration can be applied to the application of a dehumidification zone with a single zone rooftop unit or split system. In Tampa, FL, the representative for the APR Control applies an independent preconditioning (or dehumidification) zone on the outside air intake to manage the condition of the outside air being brought into commercial office, retail and institutional spaces their engineers are designing. Wherever large ventilation air requirements are being called for as a result of ASHRAE and local codes, preconditioning the outside air intake reduces the concerns of humidity buildup and related mold and mildew damage.

Properly sized equipment with the APR Control allows the outside air preconditioning zone to be controlled with a humidistat, while allowing the occupied space/building load to operate independently on call for sensible cooling from the space thermostat.
