The Challenge

Nodaway Valley School District's oversized R-22 DX unit ventilators short cycled with excess humidity and poor indoor air quality. Noise-compliance measures, reducing fan speed to meet ASHRAE NC 30, dropped discharge temperatures, which froze and burst the hot-water heating coils. Replacing the units was impractical on space.

The Solution

The district installed the APR Control on the existing unit ventilators, enabling variable capacity modulation and lower fan speeds while matching cooling output to actual classroom conditions. That prevented short cycling and improved humidity control without replacing the equipment.

The Results

The retrofit stabilized the classrooms and protected the equipment, and:

  • Eliminated short cycling for stable temperature control
  • Reduced humidity and improved indoor air quality
  • Prevented hot-water coil freezing and the costly repairs it caused
  • Avoided a full equipment overhaul by retrofitting instead of replacing
