Oversized HVAC and Short Cycling

Most DX systems are sized for a design day that happens a few days of the year. The rest of the time they are oversized and short cycling. APR Control corrects that with continuous capacity modulation, sized to the lead compressor.

How do I know if my unit is oversized?

The clearest sign is short cycling: the system cools the space fast, shuts off, and restarts a short time later, running in short bursts instead of long, steady cycles. If humidity stays high when the air feels cool, coils frost at low load, or comfort complaints and service calls keep climbing, the equipment is very likely oversized for the load it carries most of the year. Sized for a day that happens a few days of the year

Most DX systems are sized for a design day: the hottest conditions of the year, which show up only a few days a year. The rest of the time, roughly 90% of operating hours, the equipment is oversized for the load in front of it. An oversized unit cools the space quickly, satisfies the thermostat, shuts off, and starts again a few minutes later.

That on/off cycling is the root problem. Every start is wear on the compressor, and short runtimes never give the coil enough time to pull much moisture out of the air, so humidity climbs even while the thermostat reads satisfied.

The correction: continuous capacity modulation

APR Control unloads capacity continuously, sized to the lead compressor, so the system runs at reduced capacity instead of cycling off. Turndown reaches upwards of 80%+ depending on unit configuration, with no impact on the unit's rated capacity during design day conditions. The compressor runs instead of cycling, and reliability, humidity, and part-load energy all improve together.
