Restaurant Modular Chiller Crisis

A Washington D.C. restaurant's oversized modular chiller short cycled into repeated lockouts until an APR Control on each 30-ton circuit gave about 67% turndown and steady, reliable cooling.

Modular chiller

The Challenge

The restaurant's modular chiller ran four 30-ton compressors, far more capacity than the building actually needed. That oversizing caused persistent short cycling, low leaving-water alarms, and low-pressure lockouts that repeatedly left the facility without cooling and disrupted both customer comfort and kitchen operations.

The Solution

Environmental & Power Services installed an APR Control on each 30-ton circuit of the lead module. Each APR Control delivered 20 tons of modulation, letting a circuit adjust from 30 tons down to 10 tons, about 67% of its capacity, to match the real load instead of cycling against it.

The Results

The modular chiller now runs consistently, without the short cycling or lockout failures, and:

  • Holds reliable cooling for uninterrupted restaurant service and kitchen operations
  • Matched capacity to load instead of oversizing against it
  • Avoided a costly tanks, pumps, and re-piping alternative
