F1 / INDYCAR Test Lab: Holding 47 to 53% RH to Stop Rust

An INDYCAR parts manufacturer's test lab ran over 80% RH, risking rust on precision parts. An APR Control modulated the 3-ton unit down about 60 to 65% and held 47 to 53% RH.

The Challenge

The test lab's relative humidity exceeded 80%, risking rapid rust on the precision components under test. A 3-ton packaged unit had too little runtime for the low sensible load, and the surrounding auto shop, with open overhead doors and exhaust systems, drove infiltration that made the humidity worse. Without adequate vapor barriers, the lab could not hold acceptable moisture levels.

The Solution

Rawal Devices installed an APR Control on the DX refrigeration circuit, providing about 1.75 to 2 tons of modulation (60 to 65% of capacity), extending runtime and keeping the evaporator coil below dewpoint. Reduced airflow shifted the coil's latent-to-sensible ratio from about 70/30 toward 50/50, and supplemental fresh air with positive pressurization completed the fix.

The Results

The lab moved from unstable to well within its target, and:

  • Stabilized relative humidity at 47 to 53%, well below the 80% threshold
  • Eliminated rust-related part failures and the scrap labor they caused
  • Improved energy efficiency and maintenance across operating phases
