APR Control Direct Compressor Energy Savings

APR Control Compressor Power Consumption Testing Parameters

An HVAC equipment manufacturer conducted a test in their state-of-the-art testing facility to assess the direct energy-saving benefits of utilizing the APR Control at part load conditions.

  • Original equipment performance parameters:
    • 10-ton rated at AHRI 210/240
    • Two 5-ton stages
    • Design airflow of 4000 CFM (VFD)
  • Part load conditions:
    • Operating at 1500 CFM (VFD)
    • 65 degree outdoor ambient condition

Comparing the watts used on the first stage compressor of a unit with an APR Control installed vs. the same unit without an APR Control.

In addition, the manufacturer tested the same unit under Full Load (Design Day/AHRI 210/240) conditions.

Compressor Power Consumption Energy Test Results

Major Equipment Manufacturer testing the APR Control operation under part load conditions, with parameters set at 1500 CFM, full stage, and 65 degrees outdoor ambient condition. It compares the watts used on the first stage compressor of a unit with an APR Control installed vs. a unit without an APR Control. Over a 30-minute test period, the unit with the APR Control consumed 2,153 watts on the first stage compressor, whereas the unit without the APR Control used 2,503 watts. Removing the APR Control resulted in a staggering 16% increase in power consumption compared to the unit with the APR Control installed.

Over a 30-minute test period:

  • The unit with the APR Control on the first stage consumed 2,153 watts
  • The same unit without the APR Control on the first stage used 2,503 watts
  • Removing the APR Control resulted in a STAGGERING 16% increase in power consumption compared to the same unit with the APR Control installed.

When comparing the unit with the APR Control operating at part load conditions to the same unit operating at full load without the APR Control, the APR Control reduced compressor power consumption by nearly 45%.

The APR Control is ASHRAE 90.1 compliant:

  • Hot gas bypass increases power consumption
  • The APR Control reduces power consumption
  • The APR Control is NOT hot gas bypass!
